What is Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome?
Tarsal tunnel syndrome is a compression neuropathy of the posterior tibial nerve as it passes through the tarsal tunnel on the inside of the ankle. Similar to carpal tunnel syndrome in the wrist, it causes pain, numbness, and tingling in the foot and can significantly impact quality of life.
Causes
Several factors can contribute to the development of tarsal tunnel syndrome:
- Benign tumors or cysts compressing the nerve
- Varicose veins in the tarsal tunnel
- Bone spurs
- Swelling from injury or arthritis
- Flat feet causing compression
- Diabetes
Symptoms
Common signs and symptoms of tarsal tunnel syndrome include:
- Pain on the inside of the ankle and bottom of foot
- Tingling or burning sensations
- Numbness in the foot
- Shooting pain into the arch and toes
- Symptoms worsen with standing or activity
- Night pain common
